A fire at a bar in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana has killed dozens of people and injured more than 100 others during New Year’s Eve celebrations, authorities said on Thursday.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of 1 January 2026 at the Le Constellation bar in the Valais region, which was hosting a crowded New Year event. Emergency services said around 40 people were killed, while at least 115 sustained injuries, many of them serious.

Witnesses reported scenes of panic as smoke and flames spread rapidly through the venue. Hospitals across the region were placed on emergency footing, with some of the injured transferred to specialist units.

Swiss authorities have ruled out terrorism, saying initial findings suggest the incident was accidental. A full investigation is under way to determine the cause of the fire.

Crans-Montana, a popular international ski destination, has entered a period of mourning. Swiss President Guy Parmelin offered condolences to the victims’ families and praised emergency responders for their efforts.
