Russian drones and missiles target Kyiv on 27 Dec.
Russian forces launched a series of missile and drone attacks on Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine on 27 December 2025, just hours before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was due to meet U.S. President Donald Trump in Florida to discuss efforts to end nearly four years of conflict.
Explosions were reported in the Ukrainian capital as air-raid sirens sounded and air-defence systems were activated. Ukrainian military authorities confirmed that drones and missiles targeted Kyiv and regions in the northeast and south, prompting prolonged alerts although there were no immediate reports of damage or power outages.
President Zelenskyy described the upcoming talks with President Trump as an opportunity to advance a comprehensive peace settlement, noting that discussions would centre on territorial control and security guarantees after the fighting started with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. A U.S.-mediated 20-point peace plan, reportedly about 90 per cent complete, is expected to form a key basis for the negotiations.
The attacks occurred as diplomatic efforts to secure an end to the war intensified. Both leaders have stressed the need for a negotiated solution, although major differences remain, particularly over territorial issues and control over strategic areas such as the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
Russia did not immediately comment on the strikes. Meanwhile, the meeting in Florida represents one of the most significant diplomatic initiatives to date, with security guarantees and reconstruction support high on the agenda.
