Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has announced that a mutual understanding has been reached with Damascus regarding the integration of military forces, in line with what he described as the public interest. He stressed, however, that several political and constitutional issues still require time and more in-depth dialogue.

Speaking during a meeting of the Advisory Council of the Negotiation Committee, the body that supports the primary Negotiation Committee representing the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) in its dialogue with the Syrian interim government, on Thursday, 25 December 2025, Abdi said the discussions focused on the latest political developments in Syria, as well as the 10 March agreement. He noted that there was a convergence of views on a number of key issues.

The 10 March 2025 agreement between the SDF and the Syrian interim government aims to unify military and civilian institutions in northern and eastern Syria with the new government in Damascus.

Abdi explained that progress has been made towards formulating a shared vision on border crossings and borders, emphasising that natural resources belong to all Syrians and should not be monopolised by any single group.

He added that the nature of Syria’s political system and the mechanisms for power-sharing among its various components constitute fundamental pillars of any viable solution.

Achieving this, he said, requires deeper dialogue to reach a constitution that reflects the aspirations of all Syrians. Abdi reiterated that any solution to the Syrian crisis must be "decentralisation", enabling the people of each region to manage their own affairs within a constitutional framework. He expressed hope that comprehensive agreements on the remaining unresolved issues would be reached in the near future.

He further noted that some constitutional matters remain under discussion and that reaching a solution encompassing all of Syria will require time and a broader national consensus, according to the official Rojava TV channel affiliated with the AANES.

Abdi's remarks comes just days following fierce clashes between the SDF and the Syrian army forces in Aleppo, during which 17 civilians were injured and a 56-year old woman was killed.
