The secretary of the Sulaymaniyah branch of the Kurdistan Journalists Syndicate has warned that cyberattacks targeting media outlets and institutions are obstructing journalistic work, particularly in Sulaymaniyah Governorate.
Karwan Anwar, secretary of the Sulaymaniyah branch of the syndicate, told PUKMEDIA that there is a deliberate campaign of cyberattacks against media websites and digital platforms operating in the governorate, aimed at silencing and restricting their voices. He said such actions constitute a violation of the Press Law and the Law on Access to Information.
Anwar added that the syndicate has submitted several recommendations and, through media channels, has called on the government’s Department of Media and Information not to remain passive on the issue. He stressed the need for serious solutions to the problem, particularly in Sulaymaniyah, and for measures to prevent the recurrence of cyberattacks.
He further noted that the Khanum Media Foundation had been subjected to a cyberattack that resulted in the deletion of its Facebook page, while the Esta Media Foundation is currently facing a similar cyberattack.
