Iraqi President Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid met on Friday, 12 December 2025, with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr Masoud Pezeshkian, in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, on the margins of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA).

During the meeting, the two sides reviewed bilateral relations and underlined the need to strengthen them in a manner that serves the interests of both neighbouring peoples, while enabling the two countries to contribute effectively to promoting security and stability across the region.

President Rashid stressed that continued coordination between Iraq and Iran is a key factor in confronting regional challenges. He reaffirmed Iraq’s unequivocal rejection of any form of aggression or violation of national sovereignty, and reiterated Iraq’s firm commitment to peace and dialogue as the best means of resolving outstanding issues and safeguarding shared interests. He also expressed Iraq’s support for any regional or international initiative aimed at enhancing stability and preventing the region from sliding into further tensions.

The meeting also covered several regional and international developments, foremost among them the situation in Gaza. Both sides shared identical views on the need to uphold the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people, including the establishment of their independent state, and emphasised that the international community must shoulder its legal and moral responsibilities to end their suffering.
