Today, Wednesday 10 December 2025, marks the anniversary of Iraq’s liberation from the grip of the ISIS terrorist organisation and the victory of the security forces, in all their formations, over the forces of darkness that had sown destruction across the country. The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) played a pivotal role in the sacrifices made to free all areas and drive out the terrorists.

A Major Role for the Peshmerga

A local official affirmed that the Peshmerga forces made a substantial contribution to the liberation of Nineveh Governorate from ISIS and provided extensive support to the Iraqi security forces.

Ghiath Surji, media officer for the PUK’s Nineveh Organisations Centre, told PUKMEDIA: “The Peshmerga forces made a significant contribution to the liberation of Nineveh Governorate from the ISIS terrorist organisation. Prior to the arrival of the Iraqi security forces, the Peshmerga had already liberated most districts of Nineveh, including Sinjar, Makhmour, Kuwair, Baqirta and the Nineveh Plain, with the exception of Tal Afar and Hatra.”

He added that the Peshmerga played a decisive role in supporting the Iraqi security forces advancing towards central Mosul. The Peshmerga enabled Iraqi troops to reach the outskirts of the city without resistance or obstruction, stressing that this crucial role helped accelerate Mosul’s liberation.

He noted that the Peshmerga provided all necessary military and logistical support to the Iraqi forces moving on Mosul, and also opened safe corridors for displaced families and civilians fleeing the city.

Prime Minister: Our People’s Sacrifices Have Brought a Resounding Victory

Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani affirmed today, Wednesday, that the sacrifices of the Iraqi people have delivered a resounding and enduring victory.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister said: “On the eighth anniversary of Victory Day, we draw inspiration from the heroic stances and great values of sacrifice demonstrated by Iraqis as they fought the noblest and most honourable of battles to defend their country against ISIS terrorist gangs.”

He continued: “Our great people, from all backgrounds, rose to liberate the land, guided by the blessed fatwa of the Supreme Religious Authority, and their sacrifices have produced a decisive and lasting victory.”

He concluded: “Mercy and blessings upon Iraq’s martyrs—both security personnel and civilians—and shame upon the criminal terrorists.”
