The Kurdistan Region Security Agency (Asayish) has announced that it will provide greater support to young people who defend and uphold the Kurdistan flag.
On the day of the Iraqi parliamentary elections, 11 November 2025, three Kurdish youths in the disputed Tuz Khurmatu district, Saladin, were beaten and insulted by the Iraqi security forces after raising the Kurdistan flag near one of the polling stations.
The General Directorate of Asayish Operations said in statement on Saturday that the Kurdistan Region Asayish and the General Directorate of Asayish Operations immediately launched an investigation into the incident and held discussions with the relevant authorities to ensure those responsible are held accountable.
The statement added that following the assault, the youths were summoned by the Asayish and were provided with medical treatment in hospitals in Sulaymaniyah and were formally thanked, with assurances that additional support would be offered to them.
The areas disputed between Erbil and Baghdad, such as Tuz Khurmatu, extend across several provinces, including Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala and Salahaddin. These territories are recognised as areas that were subjected to extensive Arabisation policies during the former Iraqi Ba’ath regime. Article 140 of the Iraqi Constitution was designed to resolve the status of these areas; however, it has yet to be fully implemented.
