IHEC Iraq Elections

The Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) has announced that a total of 7,744 candidates have been approved to contest in the Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled to take place on the 11th of this month.

Jumana al-Ghalai, the IHEC spokesperson, told PUKMEDIA that “the total number of candidates stands at 7,744, while 848 candidates have been disqualified following a review of their files and the completion of the required legal procedures.”

The IHEC began handing over schools designated as polling centres to the security forces on Wednesday.

In a press statement, the commission revealed that around 500 fines have been imposed on political parties, blocs, and independent candidates.

The commission also clarified that voting in the upcoming elections will be limited to those possessing biometric voter cards, stressing that no individual will be permitted to vote without one, as the card serves as a secure means of verification that cannot be used by anyone else.
