The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has extended its congratulations to the Kurdistan Women’s Union on the occasion of its 36th anniversary, commending the Union’s tireless struggle in serving the women of Kurdistan and defending their rights.
In its congratulatory message, the Political Bureau stated: “The Kurdistan Women’s Union was established during the difficult period following the Anfal campaigns and the chemical bombardment of Kurdistan. Alongside the wider political struggle to confront the tragedies of those years, the Union was founded to defend the rights of Kurdish women, and it successfully mobilised a significant number of them.”
The Politburo added: “Since the uprising, the Women’s Union has empowered many women to participate actively in political, governmental, and parliamentary spheres. The prominent role played by Kurdish women in resistance and struggle is, to a great extent, the result of this pioneering organisation.”
The message further noted that this year’s anniversary coincides with the elections for a new term of the Iraqi parliament, emphasising that “the active participation of women in the electoral process, and their vote for the PUK's List No. 222, will not simply be a number in the ballot boxes but will carry deeper meaning, as women’s voices represent the perspective of half of society.”
The Politburo concluded by paying tribute to the women who struggle, create, and lead, those who have dedicated their lives to advancing women’s causes, and to the mothers who have raised their children through hardship in the service of the people and the nation.
