The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has outlined a comprehensive programme to reform and modernise the education sector in the next term of the Iraqi parliament, where the party emphasises quality, equality, and innovation. The plan focuses on increasing budget allocations, modernising curricula, supporting university independence, and promoting education in all mother tongues to ensure a stronger, more inclusive, and future-ready generation.
The PUK's Programme for Education SectorEducation forms a fundamental foundation for building a prosperous nation. The PUK, as a progressive and modern party, believes that education must be modern, sustainable, and aligned with the needs of the labour market and contemporary technology.
Key measures include:
1. Increased Budget Allocation: Advocate for a higher federal budget allocation for education in the Kurdistan Region to guarantee teachers’ salaries, rehabilitate schools, and provide necessary educational supplies.
2. Modernising Educational Programs: Support the renewal of educational programs across Iraq, focusing on critical thinking, technology, scientific development, and equal opportunities, particularly in disadvantaged or conflict-affected areas.
3. University Independence and Research Development: Ensure the independence of universities, promote scientific research, and align higher education with labour market needs.
4. Mother-Tongue Education: Protect and promote education in the mother tongue of ethnic groups, including Kurdish, Turkmen, and Syriac, in accordance with constitutional provisions.
The PUK is contesting the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November, across several governorates, presenting its candidates on an independent list numbered 222 in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala. In Nineveh Governorate, the PUK is running as part of the "Nineveh People’s Union Coalition" with number 281, while in Saladin it is fielding one candidate within the "National Masses Coalition" with number 240.
Overall, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh within the Nineveh People’s Union Coalition, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.
