The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) List 222 for the Iraqi parliamentary elections underscores the importance of supporting the Peshmerga and internal security forces. It highlights the need to strengthen their capabilities, improve their living standards, and ensure their continued service in coordination with Iraq’s military and security institutions.
The PUK affirms that it is the only political force genuinely concerned with the welfare and interests of these security bodies, which continue to carry out their duties diligently and effectively to safeguard public safety and uphold the rule of law.
Commitment to Security and Stability
Ramiar Haidar, candidate number 35 on the PUK List 222 in Sulaymaniyah constituency, told PUKMEDIA: “The PUK regards the protection of security and stability as a top priority and works continuously and diligently to ensure safety for citizens and protect their property. It plays an important role in coordination and cooperation between the security forces of the Kurdistan Region and the federal forces.”
He added: “The PUK is committed to developing the capabilities of the Peshmerga and other security forces to enhance security and stability across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. It also seeks to strengthen military colleges and academies by providing them with the resources they need.”
Training and Equipping the Peshmerga
Mazen Gharib, candidate number 7 on the PUK List 222 in Kirkuk constituency, told PUKMEDIA: “The Peshmerga forces form an integral part of Iraq’s defence system and are the protectors of the sovereignty of the Kurdistan Region. The PUK therefore regards the training and arming of the Peshmerga as one of its principal tasks to reinforce security and stability in both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.”
He further stated: “The PUK has consistently worked to resolve disputes between the Region and Baghdad through dialogue and mutual understanding, as it believes dialogue is the most effective means of addressing problems, strengthening security and stability, and preventing political tension and conflict.”
PUK’s Security and Stability Strategy
In its agenda and strategy for List 222, the PUK places great emphasis on consolidating security and stability across both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq as a whole.
To achieve this goal, the PUK aims to:
1. Peshmerga Forces: Preserve and train the Peshmerga as an integral part of Iraq’s defence system and as guardians of the Region’s territorial sovereignty.
2. Coordination with Iraqi Forces: Strengthen security cooperation with Iraqi forces to combat terrorism and maintain border stability.
3. Peaceful Resolution of Conflicts: Address internal issues in the Region and across Iraq through dialogue and political mechanisms, avoiding violence.
4. Political and Administrative Stability: Ensure the continuity of political and administrative stability in the Region and Iraq, while resisting foreign interference.
Improving Conditions for Security Forces
Fahima Sabir Hamouk, candidate number 12 on the PUK List 222 in Erbil constituency, told PUKMEDIA: “The police and internal security forces are fully committed to enforcing the law and maintaining security, but some areas still lack full implementation. If the PUK gains stronger representation, it will significantly improve the conditions of the police and security forces and, in turn, the broader Kurdish society. The PUK remains the only political entity genuinely concerned with their welfare.”
She added: “These forces require comprehensive support, including health insurance and educational assistance, to ensure their well-being during service and in their personal lives — covering the health of personnel and the education of their children.”
