Qubad Talabani, Supervisor of the electoral campaign of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) List 222 in the Erbil constituency, reaffirmed that the PUK, under the leadership of President Bafel Jalal Talabani, has undergone a major process of self-review and renewal.

“The PUK leadership has never been as united as it is today,” Talabani stated, emphasising that “the policy and decisions of the PUK now reflect the will and position of its cadres and masses.”

Writing on his official Facebook page, Talabani recalled that in previous years, many members and supporters of the PUK had legitimate criticisms of the party’s lack of unity. “They asked why the leadership had distanced itself from its mass base,” he said.

“In my meeting with the comrades of the Harir and Khalifan electoral districts,” Talabani continued, “I pointed out that in recent years, in light of those criticisms, the PUK led by Mr. Bafel has made a major review of itself. The leadership has never been as united as it is now. The policy and decision of the PUK are now the collective will of its cadres and masses.”

He further noted that President Bafel and the leadership have also decided to conduct further reviews of the party’s organisations to ensure there are no gaps and that all members feel involved and influential.

“The PUK has decided to be the party of the people,” Talabani said. “Wherever the people are, the PUK will be there.”

The PUK is contesting the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November, across several governorates, presenting its candidates on an independent list numbered 222 in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala. In Nineveh Governorate, the PUK is running as part of the "Nineveh People’s Union Coalition" with number 281, while in Saladin it is fielding one candidate within the "National Masses Coalition" with number 240.

Overall, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh within the Nineveh People’s Union Coalition, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.
