Qubad Talabani, Supervisor of the electoral campaign of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK)  List 222 in the Erbil constituency, reaffirmed that the PUK is now a strong and organised force with a clear programme, committed to addressing the demands of the dissatisfied people.

Talabani wrote on his official Facebook page: “A large proportion of people are dissatisfied with the way they are governed, frustrated by marginalisation and injustice. Many of these discontented citizens were once part of the PUK’s mass base. Some became disillusioned due to negligence, lack of planning, and internal disputes within the PUK and chose not to participate in elections, while others turned to opposition forces and voted for them.”

He added that in his meetings with PUK members from the Hiran and Basrma electoral districts, he had explained that this division among protesters had primarily served the interests of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).

“The KDP does not want to face a strong, organised force and seeks to maintain the status quo, where people are marginalised because of their positions,” Talabani said.

He emphasised that the PUK is now fully prepared to meet these challenges.

“If citizens were dissatisfied with the PUK in the past, today the party is a strong force with a clear programme. It does not compromise on the demands of the discontented people,” he stated.

Talabani concluded by calling on those discontented to strengthen the party capable of ending marginalisation and addressing issues in Baghdad.

“Instead of remaining divided or abstaining from the elections, isn’t it better to support the party with the power and programme to end marginalisation in Kurdistan and solve the problems in Baghdad?” He said.

The PUK is contesting the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November, across several governorates, presenting its candidates on an independent list numbered 222 in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala. In Nineveh Governorate, the PUK is running as part of the "Nineveh People’s Union Coalition" with number 281, while in Saladin it is fielding one candidate within the "National Masses Coalition" with number 240.

Overall, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh within the Nineveh People’s Union Coalition, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.
