PUK PUK 222 Iraqi parliament Elections Halabja Kurdistan Region Iraq

In the presence of Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), a grand carnival was held in Halabja to introduce the PUK candidates for the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections.

At the opening of the event, President Bafel addressed the crowd, stating: “Through the efforts of the President of the Republic [Iraqi President], the dreams of Halabja have been realised [Halabja becoming a governorate]. Yet, the city has not received the level of service it truly deserves. The government must pay greater attention to Halabja and its people. The families of martyrs, the disabled, and the wounded have not been adequately served. There is a great deal of money in Baghdad, and we must ensure that some of it is spent on Halabja.”

“The Stronger the PUK, the More We Can Serve the People”

Addressing the people of Halabja, President Bafel emphasised that the PUK is the people’s party, saying: “The PUK is your party. No other party has dared to come forward like the PUK. Who else encompasses youth and women as we do? We also honour our previous generations and value their sacrifices. This region is rich with religious figures and freedom fighters, and I promise to protect your security and dignity. The stronger the PUK becomes, the more effectively we can serve Halabja and its people.”

“The People of Halabja Know the PUK Is a Party of Strugglers”

President Bafel continued: “The people of Halabja know which party has struggled for them. We will secure your rights, defend you, and be your strength in Baghdad. The elections are approaching — so go and make the ballot boxes green, for yourselves, for the families of the Anfal victims, and for the strugglers.”

The PUK’s Vision Has Made 24-Hour Electricity Possible

Highlighting the PUK’s role in national energy development, the PUK President stated: “Four years ago, I said that Kurdistan’s gas would only leave our land over my dead body — and I kept my promise. It was the PUK’s vision that made it possible for the people of Kurdistan to enjoy 24-hour electricity today. So, go — turn the ballot boxes green, and go forward, always forward.”

The PUK is contesting the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November, across several governorates, presenting its candidates on an independent list numbered 222 in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala. In Nineveh Governorate, the PUK is running as part of the "Nineveh People’s Union Coalition" with list number 281, while in Saladin it is fielding one candidate within the "National Masses Coalition" with list number 240.

Overall, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh within the Nineveh People’s Union coalition, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.
