The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is working diligently to revitalise the infrastructure of the agriculture and tourism sectors while ensuring food security across the Kurdistan Region. Environmental protection has also been prioritised, forming a key element of PUK List 222’s programme for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Commitment to the Environment
Idris Haji Adil, candidate number 23 on PUK List 222 in the Kirkuk Constituency, told PUKMEDIA: "Environmental protection is vital, as a clean environment fosters a peaceful society. The PUK places great importance on both the environment and Kurdistan’s natural heritage. In fact, the proportion of green areas under PUK administration exceeds international standards."
He added: "Previously, the PUK bloc in the Iraqi parliament submitted several draft laws to the presidency, which were approved, aimed at safeguarding the environment and developing Iraq’s tourism and agricultural sectors."
Ensuring Food Security
Gharib Ahmed, candidate number 6 on List 222 in the Sulaymaniyah Constituency, told PUKMEDIA: "The Region faces drought and water scarcity, and Iraq is not immune to these risks. As the PUK parliamentary bloc, we have made serious efforts to construct dams in the Kurdistan Region. We successfully obtained ministerial approval to build dams in Raparin, Dukan, Halabja Governorate, and the areas of Sharazur, Penjwen, and Chamchamal."
He added: "Dams play a crucial role in storing water and replenishing groundwater, thereby supporting the development of agriculture and tourism. Our programme includes intensified efforts to secure water storage and food security across the Region and Iraq through enhanced agriculture and livestock initiatives."
