Qubad Talabani, Supervisor of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (PUK) List 222 Erbil constituency, stated that the authentic and original residents of Erbil have been marginalised and deprived of the city’s wealth in meeting with the party's 9th Saydawa and 11th Tayrawa electoral districts in Erbil.

Talabani said in a statement posted on his Facebook account: “It is true that this sweet city is the capital of all of us, and we are proud of its history, land, and kind people. However, the authentic people of Erbil — the original residents of Saydawa, Tayrawa, Ta'jil, Setaqan, Minara, and Badawa — should not be marginalised or deprived of the wealth of their own city.”

He highlighted the growing class disparities in the city, warning that they have become increasingly severe.

“Unfortunately, a large proportion of Erbil’s original inhabitants belong to the marginalised and low-income classes,” he said. “The PUK has worked and continues to work to stabilise the market in Erbil and across Kurdistan by addressing budget and salary issues in a short amount of time, while striving to reduce social inequality and class differences through balanced and sustainable development in the long run.”

The PUK is contesting the 2025 Iraqi parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November, across several governorates, presenting its candidates on an independent list numbered 222 in Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala. In Nineveh Governorate, the PUK is running as part of the "Nineveh People’s Union Coalition" with list number 281, while in Saladin it is fielding one candidate within the "National Masses Coalition" with list number 240.

Overall, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh within the Nineveh People’s Union coalition, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.
