The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has outlined an ambitious plan to develop the health sector across the Kurdistan Region. Having established Sulaymaniyah as a leading province in Iraq for healthcare services, the party aims, through the nomination of doctors, specialists, and healthcare professionals on List 222 for the Iraqi parliamentary elections, to reform laws governing the health sector and labour. This includes ensuring the Kurdistan Region receives its full share of medicines, medical equipment, and supplies, as well as introducing health insurance for all citizens.
PUK Candidates Emphasise Expertise in Health Policy
Dr Barzan Mohammed, candidate number 3 on the PUK’s List 222, told PUKMEDIA: “If we secure a seat in the Iraqi parliament, we will monitor the Kurdistan Region’s share of medical equipment, medicines, and supplies, both in quality and quantity. This will be achieved through the expertise of healthcare specialists. That is why the PUK, under Mr Bafel Jalal Talabani’s leadership, has carefully selected candidates from a range of medical specialties to contribute their knowledge to serving the people of Kurdistan.”
He added:“We are working to enact a health insurance law to ease citizens’ financial burdens for treatment. Simultaneously, we plan to amend the law on medical departments, as the current legislation in Iraq contains several shortcomings.”
Volunteers to Become Permanent Health Sector Staff
In a related development, the PUK’s General Administration and Finance Department recently allocated around 120 million dinars to volunteer staff at Shar, Hiwa, and Children’s Hospitals in Sulaymaniyah. These volunteers met with President Bafel Jalal Talabani, who pledged to address their concerns. The PUK now plans to convert these health sector volunteers into permanent employees.
Sharif Rahim, candidate number 18 on the PUK’s List 222, told PUKMEDIA:“The PUK is committed to serving citizens by enhancing hospital infrastructure and health oversight services. We will also work in the Iraqi Parliament to appoint health sector volunteers as permanent staff.”
