Candidates from the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) List 222 have underlined the importance of supporting the Peshmerga and internal security forces. They stressed the need to enhance their capabilities, improve their living conditions, and strengthen coordination with the Iraqi military to ensure balanced and effective national security.
Unifying the Peshmerga and Reinforcing Their Leadership
Awder Aziz, candidate No. 34 on List 222 in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, told PUKMEDIA that “the Peshmerga forces, according to the Constitution, hold a special status and operate within the legal framework of the Iraqi armed forces. However, several key measures must be implemented urgently, including unifying the forces, providing them with advanced weaponry, and reinforcing their leadership to better safeguard the Kurdistan Region’s borders and maintain stability.”
Equipping the Peshmerga with Modern Technology
Aziz emphasised the necessity of “supplying the Peshmerga with modern logistical support, military vehicles, and aircraft, as technology now plays a central role in defence and border protection. Even the most disciplined and courageous forces cannot perform their duties effectively without modern equipment, particularly given the current security challenges in the eastern-central region.”
The PUK’s Role in Supporting the Peshmerga
He further noted that “the PUK’s presence in Baghdad has been instrumental in improving the welfare and resources of the Peshmerga. Acting as a national and legitimate force, the PUK continues to coordinate closely with Iraqi counterparts to ensure the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.”
Legislative Reforms Needed for Police and Security Forces
Fahima Saber, candidate No. 12 on List 222 in Erbil Constituency, told PUKMEDIA that the police and internal security forces have remained committed to enforcing the law and maintaining public safety. However, she highlighted that several legislative measures have yet to be fully implemented. “If the PUK secures strong representation, it will play a vital role in improving the conditions of the police, security forces, and Kurdish society as a whole. The PUK is the only entity that consistently champions their interests,” she stated.
Health, Education, and Retirement Support
Saber added that “these forces require comprehensive health insurance and educational support to ensure their wellbeing and that of their families.” She also called for “raising the pensions of retired members of the police and security forces, as current rates do not reflect the magnitude of their service. Parliament must prioritise this issue through legislative amendments — a key commitment of the PUK and its parliamentary members.”
It is worth noting that the PUK and its representatives in both Baghdad and the Kurdistan Region have made continuous efforts to safeguard the rights of the Peshmerga, police, and internal security forces, ensuring improved discipline, better living standards, and fair recognition for their service to the nation.
