For the first time, the Rojava Doctors’ Union (RDU) has taken part in the World Medical Association (WMA) Conference, marking a significant step in the Union’s efforts to make the voices of Rojava’s physicians heard on the international stage and to engage with global medical institutions.

Founded in 2014, the Rojava Doctors’ Union is a non-profit professional organisation that supports Syrian doctors operating under the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (West Kurdistan or Rojava).

Dr Diyar Rasho, Head of the Public Relations Department of the RDU, represented the organisation at the WMA Conference, which brought together delegates from more than 100 countries.

This participation represents an important milestone in the Union’s drive to strengthen engagement with the global medical community, advocate for humanitarian values, and highlight the experiences of healthcare professionals working amid the ongoing challenges in Rojava.

The World Medical Association, established in 1947, represents over 10 million physicians from 110 countries. It works to promote medical ethics, defend the rights of doctors and patients, and foster international cooperation in the field of healthcare.

The 2025 WMA Conference was held in Porto, Portugal, from 8 to 11 October.
