Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met in Baghdad with Mohammed al-Halbousi, leader of the Progress Alliance.

The meeting was attended by Nizar Amedi, Member of the PUK Political Bureau, and Dr Khalid Shwani, Iraq’s Minister of Justice. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination between the two sides, with an emphasis on strengthening bilateral relations to advance joint action and improve public services for citizens.

Both leaders underscored the importance of holding transparent and fair elections that genuinely reflect the will of all citizens and the diverse ethnicities and communities of Iraq.

During the meeting, views were also exchanged on the current issues between Erbil and Baghdad. President Bafel reiterated the PUK’s firm commitment to national principles, stating: “The PUK is committed to its national responsibilities and places the interests of our people in Baghdad at the forefront. To this end, we will continue our efforts to secure the salaries of our citizens and safeguard their livelihoods.”

The PUK President arrived in Baghdad on Saturday afternoon to meet Iraqi political leaders and discuss public sector salaries and the implementation of the oil agreement between Erbil and Baghdad.

President Bafel met Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, President of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, Secretary-General of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq movement, Qais al-Khazali, and Leader of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki.
