Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), met with Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid in Baghdad.
The meeting, attended by Nizar Amedi, member of the PUK Political Bureau, and Dr Khalid Shwani, Iraq’s Minister of Justice, focused on the need for continued national dialogue among all political forces, joint efforts to serve the country, preserve peace and security, and ensure the holding of free and fair elections.
Both sides stressed the importance of continued coordination between Erbil and Baghdad to resolve outstanding issues in accordance with the constitution and applicable laws. They highlighted the need to protect the rights of all sides and guarantee the salaries and financial entitlements of the people of the Kurdistan Region.
President Bafel expressed appreciation for President Rashid’s role in bridging political differences, reaffirming: “The PUK has always advocated dialogue and recognised that the interests of our people lie in continued compromise and genuine partnership. Baghdad lies at the core of our political strategy.”
The PUK President arrived in Baghdad on Saturday afternoon to meet Iraqi political leaders and discuss public sector salaries and the implementation of the oil agreement between Erbil and Baghdad.
President Bafel met Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' Al Sudani, President of the Iraqi Supreme Judicial Council, Faiq Zaidan, Secretary-General of the Asa’ib Ahl al-Haq movement, Qais al-Khazali, and Leader of the State of Law Coalition Nouri al-Maliki.
