International Scientific Conference on President Jalal Talabani.
The 1st International Scientific Conference on President Jalal Talabani continues for its second and final day at the University of Sulaymaniyah, with wide participation from researchers and academics from across Iraq and abroad.
The second day is devoted to the presentation and discussion of scientific research. Muhammad Saeed Gul, a member of the Preparatory Committee and the Scientific Evaluation Committee, explained that 20 research papers will be discussed across five parallel sessions in separate halls, presented in Kurdish, Arabic, and English.
The research papers cover a range of themes, most notably President Mam Jalal’s political and military struggle, his regional and international relations, his role in the peace process in Türkiye, his presence in American archives, as well as key political, economic, and diplomatic aspects of his career.
The conference was inaugurated on Friday, 3 October 2025, coinciding with the eighth anniversary of President Mam Jalal’s passing. The opening session was attended by Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK); Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG); and Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed. Representatives of the Iraqi Presidency, the Prime Minister, and Dr. Mohsen Mandalawi, Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Parliament, were also present, along with numerous government, party, and academic officials.
In the opening address, Professor Dr. Kosar Mohammed, President of the University of Sulaymaniyah, highlighted the enduring legacy of President Mam Jalal for the university. He recalled that Mam Jalal had envisioned the revival of the institution following its closure in 1981 and had worked tirelessly to reopen it despite challenging political and economic conditions.
Professor Dr. Mohammed noted that these efforts bore fruit in 1991, when the university was reopened with President Mam Jalal’s direct support, culminating in 1992 with the resumption of its academic journey. Today, the University of Sulaymaniyah stands as a beacon of knowledge and learning, fulfilling the vision of its dedicated founder.
