Electoral Campaign for Iraq’s Parliamentary Elections Officially Begins

The electoral campaign for Iraq’s parliamentary elections, scheduled for 11 November 2025, officially commenced on Friday, 3 October 2025.

Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) had earlier confirmed the approval of the candidate lists by the Board of Commissioners and set the date for the beginning of the campaign period.

According to IHEC, a total of 7,768 candidates will contest the elections, comprising 2,248 female and 5,520 male candidates.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) will participate across multiple governorates with both independent and alliance lists. In Erbil, Sulaymaniyah (including Halabja), Duhok, Kirkuk, and Diyala, the PUK is running independently under list number (222). In Nineveh, it will contest as part of the Nineveh People’s Union Coalition, under list number (281). In Saladin, the PUK is fielding one candidate within the National Masses Coalition, under list number (240).

Altogether, the PUK is entering the elections with 156 candidates: 36 in Sulaymaniyah, 30 in Erbil, 5 in Duhok, 24 in Kirkuk, 28 in Diyala, 31 in Nineveh through the coalition list, and one candidate each in Saladin and Baghdad.

Nationwide, the elections will feature broad competition, with 31 alliances, 38 political parties, and 76 individual candidates—23 running in the general vote and 53 representing various components.
