Iraq’s Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Federal Minister of Oil, Hayan Abdul-Ghani, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to increasing crude oil and gas production in Kirkuk as part of efforts to strengthen the national economy and meet domestic fuel needs.
The announcement came on Thursday, 2 October 2025, during the signing of a contract between the North Oil Company, the Northern Gas Company, and BP to develop four key oil fields in Kirkuk and rehabilitate gas facilities.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Abdul-Ghani said the agreement marks “the activation of one of the most promising contracts” aimed at boosting production in the Kirkuk fields. He added that the contract also involves rehabilitating the North Gas Company’s facilities to raise gas output and ensure sufficient fuel for power generation.
The Minister explained that the initial production rate of 328,000 barrels per day is only the starting point, with further development operations planned to increase crude oil output and investment in associated gas. He stressed that the deal will create jobs in Kirkuk and neighbouring governorates while supplying fuel to the electricity sector and other local industries.
BP’s Country Director in Iraq, Zaid Al-Yasiri, welcomed the agreement, describing it as a major step in strengthening genuine cooperation with the North Oil and North Gas companies. He praised the support of the Minister and the Ministry of Oil in advancing the shared goal of boosting oil and gas production to support Iraq’s economy.
North Oil Company Director General, Amer Khalil, said that activating the contract and setting an initial production level marked the start of development operations, which would bring significant benefits to Kirkuk.
Meanwhile, North Gas Company Director General, Ahmed Abdul Majeed, confirmed that the contract with BP will raise gas production following the rehabilitation of existing facilities, providing additional fuel for power plants as well as gas for local industries.
