The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced its support for the initiative launched by US President Donald Trump aimed at ending the war in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the Ministry said it welcomed the American proposal, describing it as a step towards halting hostilities, rebuilding Gaza, and protecting the Palestinian people from displacement. The statement also stressed that the annexation of the West Bank must not be permitted.
The Ministry expressed hope that the measures outlined in the plan would contribute to alleviating the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. It called for the swift and unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid to the enclave and underlined the importance of preventing any attempts to force Palestinians from their homes.
The White House unveiled the US President’s plan on 29 September, during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The initiative sets out 20 key points, including an Israeli withdrawal to the agreed boundary and the staged release of hostages and prisoners.
Under the plan, all hostages, both living and deceased, would be returned within 72 hours of Israel’s public acceptance of the agreement. Following their release, Israel would free 250 prisoners serving life sentences as well as 1,700 Gaza residents detained after 7 October 2023. The plan also offers amnesty to Hamas members who commit to peaceful coexistence and disarmament. Those wishing to leave Gaza would be granted safe passage to other countries, while humanitarian assistance would be dispatched immediately.
The initiative has been welcomed by most Arab and Islamic states, though Hamas has yet to issue its official response.
