President of the Republic of Iraq, Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, has affirmed that resolving the long-standing oil dispute between the Kurdistan Region and the federal government marks an important step towards reinforcing Iraq’s unity and economic stability.
In an interview with the American network Fox News, President Rashid stated: “The long-running disagreement between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government over oil exports has now been resolved. This achievement represents a significant step towards consolidating Iraq’s unity and economic stability.”
He continued: “Iraq today is a stable country, moving forward with confidence. We have begun implementing practical programmes to improve citizens’ lives, whether in basic services, infrastructure development, or agricultural progress.”
On relations with the United States, President Rashid underlined that the partnership “is not confined to the presence of its forces or to the military dimension alone. It is a longstanding relationship spanning many years, and we are eager to expand it into wider fields such as trade, investment, energy, water, and other vital sectors.” He added that “the issue of withdrawal remains the subject of ongoing dialogue between the Iraqi and American governments, and I am confident that we will reach an understanding that serves the interests of both nations.”
Addressing Iraq’s ties with Iran, President Rashid explained: “Iraq and Iran are neighbours with a border stretching over 1,000 kilometres. We share overlapping interests and deep historical bonds that cannot be disregarded. Iraq’s national decisions are fully independent, and our political and economic choices are made within Iraq, by an entirely Iraqi will, free from any external dictates or interference.”
Regarding the upcoming parliamentary elections, President Rashid confirmed: “We are preparing to hold parliamentary elections next November. This represents an important milestone, demonstrating Iraq’s steady progress towards stability, reaffirming our firm commitment to democracy, and providing a crucial step towards renewing political life through a new parliament freely chosen by the people.”
President Rashid went on to stress that “the Middle East has endured years of conflict and turmoil, and it is time we channelled our efforts towards stability and cooperation.” He welcomed the recognition of the State of Palestine by several countries, describing it as “a positive development that reflects the justice of the Palestinian cause. We hope it will mark the beginning of a serious path leading to the success of international peace efforts.”
