Kurdistan Counter-Terrorism Group (CTG) announced on Saturday, 20 September 2025, that it had conducted a joint security operation with the Global Coalition and the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Service (ICTS) in Kirkuk Governorate.

In a statement received by PUKMEDIA, the CTG confirmed that the operation resulted in the arrest of a wanted terrorist who had previously been affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State (ISIS), and was engaged in providing logistical support and supplies to terrorist organisations up until the moment of his arrest.

The statement added that the suspect has been handed over to the competent judicial authorities to face trial in accordance with the law.

ISIS captured large parts of Iraq in 2014 and declared a self-styled “caliphate,” leading to widespread violence and mass displacement. Although Iraq declared victory over the group in 2017, ISIS remnants remain active, particularly in disputed territories between the federal government in Baghdad and the Kurdistan Regional Government.

These areas—including parts of Kirkuk, Nineveh, Diyala, and Saladin provinces—continue to face threats from ISIS elements who engage in ambushes, kidnappings, and extortion targeting both civilians and security personnel.

Iraqi and Kurdish security forces regularly carry out joint operations aimed at eradicating these remaining terrorist networks.
