The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) has achieved unprecedented victories in the last two elections in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, affirming its widespread political and popular support. Any statistics intended to cast doubt on its vote count or sow confusion are inaccurate.
PUKMEDIA has prepared an investigative report detailing verified figures, particularly in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, during both the Iraqi and Kurdistan parliamentary elections.
The sixth term of Kurdistan parliamentary election, held on 20 October 2024, reflected increased voter turnout and renewed citizen confidence in political forces across the Kurdistan Region. The PUK emerged as a major political force, regaining the support of a significant segment of voters who had abstained in the previous term.
According to PUKMEDIA follow-up, the PUK received 215,716 votes in the Iraqi parliamentary elections of 10 October 2021, securing 21 seats in the Iraqi Parliament and becoming the second-largest force in the Kurdistan Region. In the sixth term of the Kurdistan parliamentary elections, its votes rose to 409,548, securing in 23 seats in the Kurdistan Parliament—an increase of 194,832 votes compared to the previous elections.
In Sulaymaniyah Governorate specifically, the PUK garnered approximately 118,586 votes in the 2021 Iraqi parliamentary elections, representing 32% of the total and winning 12 seats. In the 2024 Kurdistan parliamentary elections, the PUK's votes rose to 257,359, or 41.1% of the total, securing 15 seats in the governorate.
Over just three years, the PUK has earned the trust of an additional 138,773 citizens. This progress reflects the approach of PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani, who has emphasised that the PUK is uniquely positioned to serve all citizens without discrimination and to deliver tangible results in accordance with its commitments.
