Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed has stressed that protecting children is both a national duty and a humanitarian value – a noble endeavour that underpins the foundations of a safe and prosperous nation.

Under the patronage and in the presence of Iraqi First Lady Shanaz Ibrahim Ahmed, the Kurdistan Save the Children (KSC) Organisation held a celebration on Thursday at the Baghdad Palace to mark its 34th founding anniversary.

The ceremony was attended by Ahmed al-Asadi, Iraq's Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Dr Ali Shukri, Chairman of the Presidency of the Republic’s Advisory and Experts Board, as well as a number of heads and representatives of diplomatic missions in Iraq.

In her address, the First Lady highlighted the organisation’s journey since its establishment in 1991, reflecting on its founding principles, objectives, and its pivotal role in safeguarding human rights and creating a secure and prosperous environment for future generations.

First Lady Ahmed acknowledged the challenges endured along the way, noting that the organisation’s mission was shaped by the difficulties, suffering, and deprivation experienced by the people.

She stressed that these circumstances had imposed a national and humanitarian duty to persevere with patience and resolve. She also paid tribute to Mrs Hero Ibrahim Ahmed for her significant contributions and humanitarian efforts in alleviating the suffering of children.

The First Lady underscored that protecting children is a collective responsibility borne by the state, relevant institutions, and society as a whole. She described it as both a national obligation and a humanitarian value – a noble endeavour that underpins the foundations of a safe and prosperous nation.

Speaking at the ceremony, KSC President Sara Rashid outlined the organisation’s programmes and strategies centred on defending children’s rights. She explained that its work has expanded to include initiatives in public health, economic and educational development, and youth support.

The event also featured a photo exhibition showcasing the organisation’s activities and achievements, alongside artistic and musical performances drawn from both Arab and Kurdish traditions.
