President Rashid Stresses Expanding Security and Military Cooperation with Russia

President Rashid and Mr Sergei Shoigu.
His Excellency the President of the Republic, Dr Abdullatif Jamal Rashid, on Tuesday, 16 September 2025, welcomed Mr Sergei Shoigu, Secretary-General of the Supreme National Security Council of the Russian Federation, along with his accompanying delegation, at the Baghdad Palace.
The discussions, attended by National Security Adviser Mr Qasim al-Araji, focused on relations between Iraq and the Russian Federation and explored ways to strengthen them in order to achieve the aspirations of both nations for progress and prosperity.
President Rashid extended greetings to President Vladimir Putin and underlined the importance of enhancing bilateral ties, particularly through expanding cooperation in the security and military spheres, sharing expertise and intelligence, and combating terrorism — all aimed at consolidating stability and security in both countries and the wider region.
The discussions also addressed the situation in Gaza and the broader region, with the President highlighting the importance of protecting civilians and supporting efforts towards a peaceful resolution. He commended Russia’s supportive position on the Palestinian cause.
For his part, Mr Shoigu reiterated Russia’s readiness to deepen relations with Iraq in a way that serves the shared interests of both countries and their nations.
