On Monday, 15 September 2025, a new refinery has officially begun operations in Kirkuk, with the capacity to produce 12,000 barrels of high-octane gasoline per day, in addition to liquefied natural gas.

Ali Mohammed, Director of the Kirkuk branch of the Oil Products Distribution Company, announced that the facility will initially supply Kirkuk and it’s districts before distributing to other provinces.

He explained that the project utilises 12,000 barrels of crude oil per day from the Kirkuk refinery, a quantity which previously posed a significant burden on the plant, as it could not be sold and was instead sent to other areas.

“We are pleased that this refinery has now started operating. Under the agreement with the Iraqi Ministry of Oil, we will receive crude oil exclusively from them, refine it into gasoline, and prioritise supply for Kirkuk,” Mohammed stated. “The refinery will cover the needs of all districts of Kirkuk before extending supply to other regions.”

The refinery marks a significant step towards self-sufficiency in fuel production. Officials noted that with its launch, there will be no further need to import gasoline from other provinces to meet Kirkuk’s demand.

Besides gasoline, the refinery also produce liquefied natural gas, Mohammed said.
