U.S. President Donald Trump issued a letter to NATO member states on Saturday, 13 September 2025, calling on them to cease the purchase of Russian oil and to impose coordinated sanctions on Moscow to bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

"I am ready to do major sanctions on Russia when all NATO nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO nations stop buying oil from Russia," he said in a social media post.

The U.S. President further proposed that NATO collectively impose tariffs of 50–100% on China in order to weaken Beijing’s economic support for Russia.

This latest appeal follows President Trump’s earlier threats to enforce secondary sanctions on countries continuing to import Russian oil — most notably China and India, the two largest buyers.

Recently, Washington imposed an additional 25% tariff on Indian goods in response to New Delhi’s sustained imports of Russian crude. However, no parallel action has yet been taken against China.
