A 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck Russia’s far eastern Kamchatka peninsula early on Saturday, 13 September 2025, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The quake hit at 6:37 am local time (02:37 GMT), with its epicentre located offshore near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative centre of Kamchatka Krai. The tremor was recorded at a depth of 39.5 kilometres (24.5 miles).

The U.S. Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said “hazardous” waves could occur along coastlines within 300 kilometres (186 miles) of the epicentre. Russian authorities swiftly issued a tsunami warning for Kamchatka’s coastline, placing emergency services on high alert and urging residents to avoid beaches and other tsunami-prone areas.

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, home to the Russian Navy’s Rybachiy submarine base and the Air Force’s Yelizovo airbase, reported no immediate casualties or damage.

The Kamchatka region is among the world’s most seismically active zones. In July 2025, a magnitude 8.8 earthquake off the peninsula generated tsunamis up to four metres high across the Pacific, prompting mass evacuations in Japan and other countries. That quake was the strongest since the 9.1 magnitude tremor off Japan in 2011.
