Iraq IHEC Iraqi parliament Elections

Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) announced that nearly 800 candidates have been barred from contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections, most of them over charges related to crime, corruption, and accountability.

The commission confirmed in a statement that 786 candidates have been disqualified, reducing the total number of eligible contenders to 7,709. The IHEC further noted that 46 appeals against the disqualifications are currently under review and will be processed in accordance with established procedures.

The parliamentary elections are scheduled for 11 November 2025, and according to the IHEC, all candidacies' qualifications must be finalised and approved 30 days prior to polling day, in line with Iraq’s electoral law.
