Journalist and civil activist Hemn Mamand was shot and wounded on Tuesday evening in the Aqari neighbourhood of Sulaymaniyah. The attack occurred at approximately 7:20 pm when a motorcyclist targeted him. He was slightly injured and was immediately taken to Shar Hospital for medical treatment.
The Kurdistan Region Asayish Agency has launched an investigation into the incident. Colonel Salam Abdulkhaliq, spokesperson for the agency, confirmed that the search for the perpetrators is ongoing.
The PUK Media and Awareness Bureau strongly condemned the attack, describing any attempt to assassinate Hemn Mamand as a “failed and cowardly plot.” The bureau called on security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice, while wishing Hemn Mamand a speedy recovery.
In their statement, the bureau emphasised confidence in the ability of the security agencies, noting that Sulaymaniyah has long been a peaceful city for journalists, writers, and the public. They reiterated the PUK’s commitment to supporting freedom of expression and providing a safe environment for media work in the region.
