On 26 August 2025, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced the expulsion of Iran’s Ambassador to Australia, Ahmad Sadeghi, along with three other diplomats. This decision follows findings by the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) that "Iran's government directed two arson attacks in Sydney and Melbourne in late 2024."

According to ASIO, the incidents involved the firebombing of the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne on 6 December and an arson attack on Lewis Continental Kitchen, a kosher restaurant in Sydney, on 20 October. While no casualties were reported, both attacks caused significant property damage and heightened concerns within Australia's Jewish community.

Prime Minister Albanese condemned these actions as “dangerous acts of aggression” and emphasised that such conduct would not be tolerated on Australian soil. He further announced plans to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a "terrorist organisation", a move that has garnered bipartisan support in Parliament. The Australian government also suspended operations at its embassy in Tehran and advised citizens against travelling to Iran due to safety concerns.

In response, Iran has pledged to take retaliatory measures, describing Australia's actions as an "assault on diplomacy" influenced by domestic developments, including recent protests against the war in Gaza.

This marks the first time since World War II that Australia has expelled a foreign ambassador, underscoring the seriousness with which the government views these alleged state-sponsored attacks.

Jewish organisations in Australia have welcomed the government's actions, viewing them as a necessary step in addressing "antisemitic violence." However, they also express ongoing concerns about the safety and security of their communities.

The situation remains fluid, with diplomatic tensions between Australia and Iran expected to continue as both nations navigate the aftermath of these developments.
