Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Larijani, has announced that a security agreement between Iraq and Iran is in preparation and will be signed during his current visit to Iraq.

Speaking to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA), Larijani said his first stop on the tour would be Iraq, describing it as “a friendly, neighbouring country with which we have close trade relations.”

He noted that cooperation between the two countries was at a strong level, highlighting the Arbaeen ceremonies as a prominent example. Larijani expressed his gratitude to the Iraqi government for its considerable efforts in facilitating the pilgrimage.

Larijani added: “We have prepared a security agreement with Iraq, and this is of great importance. Iran’s vision and approach to relations with its neighbours is based on the principle that the security of Iranians is important, while also paying attention to the security of our neighbours.”

He continued: “During this visit, the agreement will be signed, and we will also meet many friends in Iraq, including officials and representatives from various political factions, to hear their views and exchange ideas on areas of bilateral cooperation.”

Ali Larijani arrived in Baghdad on Monday morning, 11 August 2025, for his official visit, where he was received at Baghdad International Airport by Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji.
