A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck western Türkiye on Sunday, 10 August 2025, causing the collapse of around a dozen buildings, officials said.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre and the German Research Centre for Geosciences reported the epicentre near the town of Sindirgi, south of the city of Balıkesir, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Tremors were felt in Istanbul and across multiple provinces.

According to the EMSC, several aftershocks measuring between magnitude 3.4 and 4.6 were recorded in the area.

Sindirgi’s mayor, Serkan Sak, told HaberTurk that four people had been rescued from a collapsed building in the town, while efforts were under way to reach two others trapped inside. Several houses collapsed in the nearby village of Golcuk, and the minaret of a mosque was also brought down.

Türkiye’s disaster management agency (AFAD) has begun field surveys, urging residents not to enter damaged buildings.

“All AFAD teams and the relevant institutions have immediately begun searches on the ground. No undesirable incident has been reported so far,” Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said.

In February 2023, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake in southwestern Türkiye killed at least 53,000 people and devastated the city of Antakya, while a further 6,000 were killed in neighbouring Syria. More recently, a magnitude 5.8 tremor in the same region caused one death and injured 69 people at the beginning of July.
