Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid.
Recalling the genocide committed against the Yazidi people, Iraqi President Abdullatif Jamal Rashid called for serious efforts to address the long-term consequences of the atrocities perpetrated by the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist organisation.
ISIS terrorist organisation seized vast parts of northern and western Iraq in June 2014. Two months later, on 3 August 2014, the organisation launched a genocide against the Yazidi community in the Shingal (Sinjar) district, which is heart of the Yazidi land. They kidnapped 6,417 Yazidi women and children. Many people were subjected to sexual slavery and forced labour. In the space of a few weeks, more than 5,000 people were killed.
In a statement posted on the X platform, President Rashid said:
“On the anniversary of the genocide against the Yazidis, we recall the tragedy perpetrated by ISIS gangs—killing, enslavement, and abduction—in one of the most heinous and racist terrorist acts of the modern era, aimed at erasing a deeply rooted and authentic Iraqi community.”
Marking the 11th anniversary of the massacre, the President emphasised the importance of continuing efforts to restore justice and dignity to the Yazidi people.
“Eleven years have passed since this painful tragedy. There must be serious work to address its repercussions, ensure the safe return of all displaced families to their homes, intensify efforts to uncover the fate of those still missing, and strengthen security and stability in Sinjar and throughout Iraq,” he added.
