Iraq Hit by Intense Heatwave as Temperatures Exceed 50°C.
The Iraqi Meteorological Authority has warned of soaring temperatures across the country this week, with several regions forecast to exceed 50°C (122°F)—a stark reminder of the intensifying global climate crisis.
In a statement issued on Monday, the authority predicted persistent hot and dry conditions through Friday, particularly in southern cities like Maysan and Basra, where highs are expected to reach 51°C. Central cities such as Baghdad, Najaf, and Kirkuk are forecast to reach 49°C, while temperatures in Sulaymaniyah and Duhok are expected to hover around 45°C.
The heatwave, driven by seasonal climate patterns, coincides with a period of mounting concern over extreme temperatures across the Middle East and North Africa. Such conditions have strained power grids, worsened water shortages, and raised public health risks—especially for vulnerable populations and outdoor workers.
Northwesterly winds are expected throughout the week, but they are unlikely to bring significant relief. Officials have advised residents to take necessary precautions and limit exposure during peak afternoon hours.
This latest heatwave adds to a growing number of record-breaking weather events in the region, prompting renewed calls for action on climate resilience and infrastructure preparedness.
