The Iraqi Ministry of Migration and Displacement announced on Sunday, 27 July 2025, the ongoing return of displaced Iraqi citizens from Al Hawl camp in northeastern Syria, with officials describing the process as a positive step toward successful reintegration into society.
According to the Ministry, 15,000 Iraqis have so far been repatriated, including 10,000 who have been returned to their hometowns. The remaining 5,000 are currently housed in Al-Jadaa camp, where they are undergoing rehabilitation before reintegration.
Karim al-Nouri, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Migration and Displacement, told the Iraq's state media (INA): “The process of returning displaced persons from Al-Hawl camp is still ongoing, with the aim of integrating them and transferring them to their homes.”
He noted that the Ministry, in coordination with international organisations, has played a central role in facilitating these returns. “The majority of Iraqis in Al-Hawl have been repatriated to their hometowns, which is a strong indication of our success in rehabilitating them within Iraqi society,” he added.
Nouri confirmed that approximately 18,000 Iraqis still remain in Al-Hawl camp and will be repatriated once security vetting procedures are completed and appropriate conditions allow for their safe return.
The Ministry emphasised that the continued progress in repatriation efforts reflects Iraq’s commitment to addressing displacement and restoring stability in affected communities.
Al Hawl camp is considered one of the most dangerous camps in the world, as it includes the families of the most extremist Islamic State (ISIS) mercenaries, "Syrians, Iraqis, foreigners", especially those who arrived in the camp in February 2019 during the campaign against the last strongholds ISIS mercenaries in the town of Al-Baghouz.
