French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot met with Mazloum Abdi, Commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), on Friday, 25 July 2025, in Paris to discuss efforts toward a peaceful resolution for Syria’s unification.
According to a statement from the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, the meeting followed Barrot’s earlier talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and U.S. Special Envoy for Syria Tom Barrak.
The ministry noted that the meeting served to finalise plans for an upcoming negotiation session in Paris under the joint auspices of France and the United States between the Syrian transitional authorities and the Syrian Democratic Forces with a view to implementing 10 March agreement.
The statement added that the French Minister reaffirmed France’s support for a negotiated and peaceful solution for Syria’s unification, including the integration of the population of northeast Syria into the political transition process and the protection of Kurdish rights.
Earlier in the day, Barrot also held talks in Paris with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani and U.S. Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrak. The three officials reaffirmed their commitment to a political transition in Syria, the preservation of its territorial integrity, and the promotion of regional stability.
In a statement, the French Foreign Ministry confirmed plans to convene further consultations in Paris.
“The next round of consultations between the Syrian government and the Syrian Democratic Forces regarding full implementation of the 10 March agreement will be hosted in Paris as soon as possible,” the statement said.
