North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has ordered his military to intensify training and remain in a state of full combat readiness for a potential “real war,” according to a statement released by state-run outlet KCNA and reported by several international media.

Kim made the comments while overseeing a live-fire artillery drill earlier this week. He praised the frontline units for their combat discipline but warned that the country’s forces must remain ready to “destroy the enemy in every battle” and respond to any provocation with “immediate and relentless” force. The drill featured the simulation of a sudden counterattack, with artillery units firing at designated targets, Reuters reported.

“Modern warfare demands intensive, realistic training and the ability to strike first if necessary,” Kim said, according to KCNA, as quoted in The Economic Times.

This is not the first time the North Korean leader has issued such a warning. In April 2024, Kim told military educators that it was time to prepare more seriously for war than ever before, citing heightened external threats. Similarly, in December 2023, he instructed the country’s military, defence industry, and nuclear units to accelerate war preparations in response to what he called “grave political and military developments” on the Korean Peninsula.
