The United States' President Donald Trump has announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), with the decision set to take effect on 31 December 2026.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the U.S. President cited concerns over the agency’s direction and priorities, saying the U.S. would reassess its participation in international organisations to ensure alignment with national interests.

“We believe in strong international cooperation, but it must be based on fairness and mutual respect,” the President said. “This decision reflects our view that American support should be directed where it can be most effective.”

This marks the third time the U.S. has left UNESCO, following previous withdrawals in 1984 and 2017. The U.S. had rejoined the organisation in 2023 under President Joe Biden.

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay responded to the announcement with regret, stating that while the agency values the U.S.’s historic contributions, it remains committed to its global mission. “We respect the decision of the U.S. government and will continue our work to promote education, science, culture, and communication across the world,” she said.

UNESCO, founded in 1945, is well known for its efforts to preserve World Heritage Sites, promote global education, and support press freedom. The U.S. has long been a key contributor, historically providing around % 22% of the organisation’s funding.
