Tuncer Bakırhan, Co-Chair of the Peoples' Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party), has offered support to recent remarks by Devlet Bahçeli, leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), suggesting that one of the two vice presidents in Türkiye could be Kurdish and the other Alevi.

"Why shouldn't the president be Kurdish?" Bakırhan remarked in a statement. "We are candidates for office. I don't know what the political equation will look like in the next term, but it is important and meaningful for all identities in our country to be included in governance."

Bakırhan also addressed questions about the visit by National Intelligence Organisation (MIT) Director İbrahim Kalın to the DEM Party headquarters on Monday. "Our meeting with the intelligence service was confidential. I can't share the content of our discussions, but the meeting was positive. We exchanged views and were briefed — that’s all I can say."

In a message to the ruling Republican People's Party (CHP), Bakırhan added: "As a founding party with deep historical roots, the public has high expectations of the CHP to play a leading role in advancing a democratic solution to the Kurdish question."
