Kurdistan VP, British CG: Reunification of Peshmerga Forces Essential for Stability

Sheikh Jaafar Sheikh Mustafa, Vice President of the Kurdistan Region, received Andrew Bizley, British Consul General in the Kurdistan Region, along with his accompanying delegation on Sunday, 20 July 2025.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed recent political and security developments in Iraq and the wider region, as well as relations between Erbil and Baghdad, the upcoming Iraqi parliamentary elections, and ways to further enhance diplomatic ties between the United Kingdom and the Kurdistan Region.
Both parties reaffirmed that outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad must be resolved through dialogue and in accordance with the Iraqi Constitution. They also underscored that the threat posed by Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists remnants, necessitating continued coordination and cooperation between the Coalition forces, the Peshmerga, and the Iraqi army.
A key topic of discussion was the ongoing reform process within the Ministry of Peshmerga Affairs, particularly the efforts to unify the Peshmerga forces under a single, cohesive command structure within the Ministry. Both sides agreed that the reunification of the Peshmerga is vital for long-term stability and security in the region.
