The Iraqi Parliament is set to convene an extraordinary session on Monday, 21 July 2025, to deliberate on two pressing matters currently dominating both official discourse and public concern across Iraq, including within the Kurdistan Region.

According to the session agenda released by the Parliament’s Media Department and reviewed by PUKMEDIA, proceedings will commence at 1:00 PM and will comprise two principal items:

-A general discussion regarding the recent fire incident in Kut.

-A general discussion concerning terrorist attacks involving explosive drones targeting infrastructure in the Kurdistan Region.

Since the beginning of July, the Kurdistan Region has witnessed a series of drone strikes targeting a range of sites, including oil fields, security installations, and airports.

PUKMEDIA has compiled data indicating that between 1 and 18 July 2025, the Kurdistan Region experienced 15 drone attacks. These included four attacks on Erbil, five on Sulaymaniyah, four on Dohuk, two on the Zakho district of Dohuk, and four on Kirkuk, utilising both drones and missiles.

Nine of the attacks specifically targeted oil and gas installations, including Khurmala, Khor Mor, Sarsang, Atrush, Bai Hassan, Fishkhabur, Tawke, and Hunt Oil. The remaining incidents were directed at security forces and airports.

Separately, a devastating fire broke out last Wednesday evening at a hypermarket in Kut, the capital of Wasit Governorate. The blaze claimed the lives of more than 70 individuals and injured dozens more, including women and children.

In response, the Iraqi Federal Government established a special committee to investigate the incident. As part of preliminary measures, three officers have been suspended and 17 employees dismissed pending the outcome of the inquiry.
