The Iraqi Presidency welcomed on Saturday, 12 July 2025, the announcement by the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) regarding the commencement of the disarmament process, describing it as "a significant historic milestone that paves the way for ending decades of armed conflict and security violations."
In an official statement received by PUKMEDIA, the Presidency of the Republic stated: "The Presidency of the Republic welcomes the announcement made by the Kurdistan Workers' Party regarding the commencement of the process to lay down arms—an important historic step that lays the groundwork for ending a prolonged period of armed conflict and security breaches, which have claimed the lives of countless citizens. This development opens the door to future prospects that could significantly enhance the chances of peace and stability across the region."
The statement continued: "The Presidency calls for full commitment to upholding security and stability while supporting the legitimate rights of all parties. We affirm that this move constitutes a vital component in consolidating regional security and stability and provides a foundation for strengthening bilateral relations between the Republic of Iraq and the Republic of Türkiye, based on mutual respect for sovereignty and the safeguarding of the security and welfare of both friendly peoples."
The Presidency reiterated its full support for the success of this initiative and its potential to achieve the desired objectives of closing a painful chapter in the region’s history and opening a new era founded on cooperation and coordinated efforts in the common interest of all parties involved.
The PKK began the process of laying down their arms to continue their struggle via legal means, where a group of 30 PKK guerillas, including senior officials, laid down their weapons on Friday and destroyed them in a ceremony held at the Jasana Cave, in Sulaymaniyah.
