PUK President Bafel Jalal Talabani.
Bafel Jalal Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan region, welcomed the Kurdistan Workers' Party's (PKK) disarmament in Sulaymaniyah province, describing it as a landmark move towards lasting peace and dialogue in North Kurdistan and Türkiye, and calling it a vital opportunity to end bloodshed and pursue a political solution.
The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) took the first formal step towards disarmament on Friday, 11 July 2025, marking a significant turning point after more than four decades of armed struggle. A group of 30 PKK members, including senior officials, laid down their weapons in the Surdash area of Sulaymaniyah, inaugurating the initial phase of a broader disarmament process, with further steps expected to follow.
The PUK President's message following the PKK disarmament ceremony said:
The Kurdistan Workers' Party disarmament in Sulaymaniyah province is a historic step towards a new phase in North Kurdistan and Türkiye through dialogue and peace.
The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan firmly believes that bloodshed will only deepen the problems, and now is the time to lay down arms and go to the negotiating table to achieve the legitimate rights of all parties.
While we continue our efforts to make the peace process succeed, we are also proud to see the foundation for peace laid by President Mam Jalal being implemented today.
We hope this step marks the beginning of a new phase in normalising relations between the parties and directly strengthens the stability of the Kurdistan Region.

Qubad Talabani: Sulaymaniyah Continues Its Role as a Beacon of Dialogue and Peace
In a statement following the start of the PKK disarmament process, Qubad Talabani praised Sulaymaniyah’s enduring role in fostering peace:
“Sulaymaniyah, a city long known for building bridges and resolving conflicts through dialogue, has once again embodied this spirit today.
The PKK has destroyed its weapons from a position of strength, as part of a significant and courageous peace initiative.
We remain committed to supporting this process, guided by a profound hope for lasting peace and democracy.”
