U.S. President Donald Trump on Sunday, 29 June 2025, pleaded for progress in ceasefire talks in the war in Gaza, calling for a deal that would halt the fighting in the 20-monthlong conflict as the sides appeared to be inching closer to an agreement.

“MAKE THE DEAL IN GAZA. GET THE HOSTAGES BACK!!!” President Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social early Sunday between posts about a Senate vote on his tax and spending cuts bill.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that a ceasefire in Gaza could be achieved within the next week, raising expectations for a resolution to the conflict . Speaking to reporters, President Trump affirmed, "We're working on Gaza and trying to get it taken care of" .

President Trump has consistently called for Israel and Hamas to end the conflict . An earlier eight-week ceasefire was brokered as President Trump took office this year; however, subsequent efforts to secure a new agreement have been unsuccessful .

Amidst these developments, Ron Dermer, Israel's Minister for Strategic Affairs and a key adviser to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, is scheduled to travel to Washington this week for discussions concerning a ceasefire .

President Trump indicated he had spoken with individuals involved in the ceasefire and hostage release negotiations, suggesting a deal is "close" . His remarks followed reports of Dermer's impending visit to Washington for talks on Gaza and Iran .

The current conflict in Gaza began after Hamas-led militants launched an assault on 7 October 2023, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages, according to Israeli tallies.

Gaza's health ministry says Israel's post-Oct.7 military assault has killed over 56,000 Palestinians. The assault has also caused a hunger crisis, internally displaced Gaza's entire population and prompted accusations of genocide at the International Court of Justice and of war crimes at the International Criminal Court. Israel denies the accusations.
